The lazy subconscious

joyfulchicken's picture

For as long as I can remember, I have had trouble waking up in the morning. Back in high school, I was late for class almost everyday despite living just 2 minutes away from my school.

It got worse in college, probably because I no longer had my mother around to shout at me and hit me with a pillow until I get up. I soon realized that my alarm clock wasn't working because I have developed muscle memory to reach over and turn the alarm off without even opening my eyes. Apparently, my subconscious mind is lazy and wants to do nothing except sleep all day.

Adding my cellphone as a second alarm clock didn't help much--same problem. So I started placing the alarm clock on a table far away from my bed. That worked reasonably well for a while, but eventually, my lazy subconscious mind learned how to walk across the room, turn the alarm off, and get back to bed without ever remembering a thing.

My conscious mind, which is probably just as lazy but a little bit more responsible, keeps trying to fight back. It's not really a fair fight, considering that the conscious mind isn't particularly conscious in the first groggy moments right after I wake up. But I keep fighting (and losing).

My latest strategy is placing the alarm clock in a different spot every night. The idea is to not allow my muscle memory to pull the "haha, I know where the alarm clock is" trick. Sometimes, when I really have to wake up at a specific time, I create a random obstacle course in the room with some chairs. The pain from bumping into chairs helps.

But even that is starting to fail from time to time. And it failed today. Before I went to sleep at 5 AM, I set my alarm clocks to 9:30 AM so that I could catch Game 2 of the NBA Finals. I woke up at 11.

What the hell happened? I don't know. I don't remember a thing. Fortunately, I didn't miss much--it was a boring one-sided game. Still, I'm getting worried. And pissed. Does waking up really have to be this hard? Damn you, lazy subconscious.

By the way, I'll have to wake up at 7 AM on Wednesday. I'll let you know how it turns out. Wish me luck. And if you have any "wake up" tips to share, please do.

From 5:30 to 9am? That

From 5:30 to 9am? That doesn't seem like enough sleep! :D

I arrived here while searching the web trying to figure out whether I'm losing my mind, or people really have problems with alarm clock failure.

I've realized that the key to waking up without problems

is to get enough sleep. Unfortunately, my very lazy subconscious refuses to consider anything less than 10 hours as "enough sleep" :-( I just can't win.

Enough sleep

I'm the same way. Also, there seems to be only a small window, for me, between sleeping enough and sleeping too much p;

I wonder if everyone is the same

I do this too. I try to put my phone at hard to reach places but they don't work anymore. I just need to have something really important to do to wake me up. But sometimes the fucking phone doesn't ring. Damned phone.

Maybe the phone does ring,

and you just fail to hear it because you're in a deep sleep? At least that's what always happens to me, heh.

Maybe

that was what happened years ago. Now I have another phone where the little alarm clock sign will disappear after it rings. If I still see it after I wake up super late, I'll know it didn't ring. So I'm sure, at times the phone hates me.

Mine allows me to snooze for 10 minutes

by hitting any key except the "end" key. Unfortunately, I've somehow learned to hit the "end" key without waking up.

I dont know

Me, I sleep through the entire alarm period... hence my 130 lates last year in just 11 months.

Mine gives me like 8 minutes snooze time

I think. Never really cared to check. Talking bout waking up in the morning is depressing.

My gives five minutes

So I never use the feature. On the other hand, if it was a full hour...
