Angels and demons and Coke
If you watch Philippine TV, you must have seen the new Coke ad that features a pretty angel. Those of us who don't can always turn to YouTube.
(Click here if you're interested in behind-the-scene stuff.)
It's definitely one of the best and most visually stunning Philippine TV ads that I've ever seen. But I hate it. Well, I loved it until last week. That was when NBA.com showed the freaking ad before every video clip. Have you ever played your favorite song for 30 times straight and ended up hating it so much that you want to stab the next person you see? Yeah....
I now loathe the ad with every fiber of my being, and I never want to see it again... ever. I didn't even check if I embedded the right YouTube video up there. It can be the wrong video for I all know. Maybe it's Japanese octopus porn. Japanese vomit porn. Or Japanese poop porn. I don't give a shit. You can't make me click the play button. You can't!
Unlike me, my buddy Philos hated the ad from the very start. Why? Because it offends his delicate religious sensitivities. In fact, he's boycotting all Coca-Cola products. (Oh no! How will the company survive?)
Now all you Philos fans know why he wasn't at the Coke Zero event two weeks ago.
So what part of the ad did he find offensive? Here's his explanation:
The presumption that an ethereal being will choose mortality for such a base reason is an affront to my ecclesiastical sensibilities. Even more so the presumption that a demon can forgo damnation by choosing Coke. An exceedingly, I hope you'll agree with me, preposterous claim.
Do you understand now? I still don't. Sure, I got his point, but his point seems... pointless. I think he has had too much Jesus juice. And I suspect that most Christians, even the conservative ones, wouldn't mind the Coke angel/demon ad that much. Am I wrong?
If you're a Christian, I really want to hear your take on this. Let's have a discussion/debate/flamewar... put the fun back into fundamentalism!

Meh. (the classic subject)
I am fundamentalist myself, albeit of the more free-thinking ones. I think that ad is more of a demo of the producers' Final Cut skills to go "Dude, you know that Coke ad? I created it" with their video junkie posse. The only thing it's going for it is the pretty chick (and the dude for the girls, I'm guessing), and in that I find it bland more than offensive. Putting pretty faces + piggybacking on religious emblems is a cheap way to get talked about; I can see where Philos is coming from, although again, I'm probably not that staunch a fundamentalist to really take offense. It's bland, tasteless, and definitive of 21st-century advertising that's devoid of focus and gives no clear message to the target market, whatever strata of society they're trying to target (that which can't be neither told from the ad). On the other end of the spectrum, there's Apple with its short, hard-hitting, accessible ads with no flashy graphics that you actually want to keep watching over and over. This is coming from the guy who has nothing more than pure disgust for Apple bigotry.
I think that's the first non-retarded comment I've made in years 'round here. Way to go, as if we have those types of readers here at CF. Now excuse me while I go get myself a Pepsi Max (no to go on a completely irrelevant tangent here, but yesterday I had my first Max in 3 months. I've been too taken by the hypnotic black and red Coke Zero logo and it's all I've been drinking until yesterday when I realized how regular Pepsi-like Max is more than Zero to regular Coke. and yes, I just woke up one day and suddenly noticed how I am now able to tell the difference between HFCS- and aspartame-based soda. Weird, it is)
You made some good points
But I'm not sure if focus is an important thing for Coke ads, because their target market is pretty much everybody. 99.9% of the population already knows about Coke, so they have the luxury of not needing an informative or focused ad. The goal of the ad is to brainwash mindless consumers into choosing Coke over other brands all the time, and I think the hypnotic music and the trippy visuals are effective enough in this regard.
And I find Apple's "I'm a PC, I'm a Mac" ads very annoying. Or maybe that's just because I hate Justin Long.
i like
dat hot chick
Colonel Sanders
likes hot chicks too, but not that kind.
I've seen the AD maybe 5
I've seen the AD maybe 5 times in total. From a purely design POV, I thought the concept was clever. From a vaguely Christian POV, it doesn't offend me at all. But you already knew that, haha.
Oh any you should've checked the video; it's Japanese fish porn.
:-|
Is it really fish porn or are you just trying to trick me into playing the video?
Hahaha! Fish porn!
Whatever gave you that idea?
Trust me,
you don't want to know :-D
keepin' it cool
hmm... i thought it was nice, because the visuals were smooth. as for the Christian side, c'mon, let's not take it too seriously, after all, it's but a bottle of coke.
Well,
I guess some people take it more seriously than others.
i liked it until the girl spoke like a ngo-ngo tweety bird.
as far as the religious side of things, i dont think there's anything blasphemous about it.
Heh
Yeah, her voice is a bit annoying. Good thing she only had one line.
My first thought when I saw her was
Is that Jessica Alba??
But she doesn't look like Jessica Alba :-/
She's just as hot though.
meet my cat chicken
hey there
thought you'd like to see my cat again
since i find his new pictures on my blog less snobby
hahaha
Yay! Cat pictures!
Raw material for lolcats!
...
I have one word for those who think along the lines of "get a friggin life, it's just an ad": contempt.
Hehe
And who would that be?
How about...
"get a fucking life, religion is just a fairy tale nonsense, based on our ignorance of the surrounding world?"

Likewise
Likewise
chill
you don't have to speak crudely just to get to your point, man. this is supposed to be fun. if there's anything offensive here, it may be that some disrespect others' beliefs.
if you're not into religion, fine. just respect those who are into it.
peace, man.
That's a reply
to Carnifex's comment, yes? If so, let the flamewar begin! >:)
That sounded just like...
"If you're not into opium, fine. Just respect those who are into it". Why exactly should I respect people with no grip on reality and false hopes based on some fairytale omnipotent creature who isn't actually that omnipotent, as evidenced in the Bible itself in multiple occasions?

Yay, flamewar brewing
Markus, your rebuttal?
chill again
My rebuttal?... I have none. Heheh.. Everyone's entitled to express their own opinions.
As with the last time.. "Peace, man!".. Have fun.
Haha
That's not how you do a flamewar! :-P
I guess the Chicken Mafia is really no place for intelligent debate. Oh well.
:-(
What a fuck, I try to have a proper flame war to get the blood moving, remember the good old days, and the guy just peace-outs without even invoking Godwin's Law or something :-(

i respect atheists and i
i respect atheists and i respect those who value religion, too. :D
I think respect
is overrated.
I respect the right of people to have opinions, but I don't respect people. There's a difference ;-)
If anybody took the time to read the whole thing
You'd know I don't care one way or the other what other people think. Should you boycott Coke because of the ad? Should other Christians? I really couldn't care less. I'm not even trying to make a point, I'm merely stating the principle behind my boycott. And seeing as this is not really a matter of right and wrong, I don't see why I shouldn't stand by my principle.
No one is saying
that you shouldn't :-P
Huh? Demon? What demon?
There's a demon? I don't know but I don't like that ad too. I didn't get the meaning until you explained it (well, philos explained it, in a highly incomprehensible english. Sorry I have narrow vocab). But he boycotted coke? Hahaha!
The guy at the end
is/was a demon :-P
What makes you think so?
Just coz he said "I am now" ?
Because
he had demon horns? Go watch it again :-P
Ah!
I see it now. Eew. Ugly. Ditch him.
Religion
is for retards or people with no life or sense of belonging. I found this commercial annoying after watching it TWICE!
But I like coke, so oh well.
Yay!
Do we get a flamewar now? No? Boo :-(
Well, I agree with the guy, ...
...so I can't make a flame war. Sorry :-(
